What Are Fairies?
You’ve probably heard of fairies if you grew up watching Disney movies or reading fairy tales. Those adorable little creatures with sparkling wings and almost human faces.
But what if I told you that, in the original tales, encountering a fairy could be the worst mistake of your entire life?
Think they’re cute?
Well... this is a true fairy.
Insect Or Animal-Like Beings, From Tall to Small, Indifferent to Aggressive. But ALWAYS Powerful, one thing you probably didn’t know about them is that they’re...
cannibals.
Yes, these little things are capable of devouring humans on their own easily, sometimes even their own kind. But that’s not nearly even the worst part. They also steal human children, raising them as their own.
On top of that, fairies are incredibly petty and territorial. Trespass on the wrong patch of forest, offend one by accident, and you might find yourself wishing you’d never been born.
If You Do Find One However, Follow These 7 Simple Rules:
Never eat their food without permission.
Never give them your true name.
Never accept a gift without offering something in return.
Never say 'thank you'
Never break a promise made to a fae.
Never exclude a fae from a party.
And Never, Never NEVER, hurt the Nature in the Presence of a Fairy, You'll Begin Wishing They Had Eaten you instead of being turned into a massive blob of Conscious Meat.
Things You SHOULD do if you treasure your life.
Carry a piece of iron.
Leave offerings in places where they are customary.
Keep track of time.
Follow Their Customs
Magic Of the Fae
They can bless a child with beauty, luck, and a life of prosperity... or curse them with a fate far worse than death. They can keep someone young forever, brew potions with all sorts of wonderful effects, and bend the forces of nature to their will.
And when I say nature, I mean all of it. Plants, flowers, roots, poison, storms, rivers, and even the seasons themselves. Some Fae are even said to possess stranger abilities, manipulating dreams, emotions, illusions, and time itself.
But here's the catch: their magic rarely comes without consequences.
A blessing might turn into a curse. Eternal youth might mean watching everyone you love to grow old and die. And that miraculous potion that promises to cure any illness? Well, you might want to check the ingredients first.
After all, the Fae are masters of their craft.
And they don't always care what happens to you once the magic takes effect.
But Enough About Fae, Let's Speak About Zephirael's World and Backstory.
The World Beyond the Slumber.
Once upon a time, there was a world where fairy tales came true.
It was a gift from God and His angels, a world brought to life by humanity’s belief in the extraordinary. Fairies danced beneath the moonlight, enchanted forests flourished, and creatures once confined to bedtime stories walked among the living. It was a world of wonder, where every story seemed destined to have a happy ending.
But what happens after the happily ever after?
The stories did not end. Kingdoms grew, kings became greedy, and wars erupted between the very creatures who had once lived in harmony. Humanity’s belief, once a source of wonder, began to give life to darker things. Fear and hatred seeped into the world, altering fairy tales and allowing creatures from beyond its boundaries to find their way inside.
Among them were the Night-Gaunts, faceless horrors that stalked the dreams of the living. And they were not the only ones.
As Eldritch creatures invaded their world, magic began to dwindle. The fairies, once gentle and whimsical, were forced to become indifferent, then cruel, simply to survive. In a world where kindness could mean death, even the most beautiful creatures learned to bare their teeth.
A world where fairies stole children, where wolves wore the faces of men, and where angels descended from the heavens as beings of dreadful divinity. Where ancient forests whispered in forgotten tongues, and things lurking beyond the stars sought to devour all that remained.
The Magic once abundant, grew scarce as countless creatures struggled to survive.
Even the fair folk were growing weary.
Among them was Zephirael, a peculiar little fairy born of a Throne, a being of angelic majesty, and a Fairy of Slumber, whose magic wandered through the dreams of others.
His father was an angelic being who spent his dwindling strength protecting their sanctuary from the horrors beyond its walls. His mother, meanwhile, was the one who protected the dreams of everyone in their refuge. even in her dreams, she was constantly pursued by Night-Gaunts that grew bolder with every passing night.
Despite his lineage, Zephirael was considered one of the weakest of his kind. He bore little horns, possessed an almost identical human appearance, and lacked the dreadful grandeur expected of a true fairy. Perhaps his father's blood had made him so, or perhaps it was simply the lack of magic that couldn't understand the power of his lineage anymore.
In a world where magic was essential for survival, he was hardly equipped to endure its horrors.
But then, one night, as the world beyond their refuge trembled beneath yet another distant calamity, Zephirael and his mother wondered if there was any way to escape their dying home.
“What if we run to... another world...?” she asked.
A place untouched by their wars. A place where magic had not been exhausted, where their kind could exist without fear of extinction.
But how could they reach somewhere they had never seen?
Then, his mother considered the nature of her own magic.
The Night-Gaunts Were One of The Few Eldritch Creatures That weren't naturally of this world, so how did they even reach this place?
The Dreams.
As Humanity's Faith Began to Falther And The Madness Affected Their Mind, The Night Gaunts Found a Way to this world from those nightmares.
So why couldn't they try the same? no matter how mighty or insignificant, every being eventually falls asleep. And every creature that sleeps may dream.
If Dreams could serve as a door to beyond the boundaries of the universe, into places shaped by imagination, memory, and desire. Perhaps, somewhere among those countless dreams, there were real worlds like their own.
But how could one leap so far from a dream into an entirely different reality?
The answer was the dreams themselves.
Rather than attempting to reach another world in a single, impossible jump, why not just go deeper into a dream? visit the dreams of the people from someone's dream.
From Dream To Dream, From Soul to Soul
A little at a time.
Until they found somewhere far enough away from the horrors they knew. Somewhere with enough magic to flourish, enough peace to rest, and enough kindness to call home.
And so, a journey was conceived.
A journey between dreams.
A journey between worlds.
And perhaps, one day, a journey back home.
For even in the darkest of fairy tales, there is always someone foolish enough to dream of a happy ending.
